WHO WE ARE

The original Hackleton & District WI was formed in the 1920’s and held its meetings on Thursday afternoons.  In 1965, because many women were now starting to go to work and domestic life had changed, it was felt there was a need to hold meetings in the evening.  On 4th November 1965 a meeting was held and from this the first evening meeting took place on 18th November 1965.  Both afternoon and evening clubs ran in tandem for a while until the late 1960’s when the afternoon WI was dissolved due to shrinking membership.  From this change the current WI has been shaped.

Inspiring Women - Then and Now

The WI is a unique organisation shaped by its members.  In 1915 the WI set out to give women a voice and to be a force for good in the community.  More than a century later, the world has changed in many ways, but the WI has been a constant throughout.  Since then, their members and  ambitions have grown tremendously.  From a humble start in a small North Wales village to boosting food supplies during both World Wars and ground-breaking campaigns on equal pay and AIDS awareness – the NFWI has a longstanding history of undertaking educational work and campaigning on a diverse range of issues.    Today it is the largest women’s organisation in the UK and they pride themselves on being a trusted place for all women of all generations to share experiences and learn from each other.  The WI was established to ensure that women are able to take an effective part in their community, to learn together, widen their horizons, improve and develop the quality of their lives and those of their communities and together influence local, national and international affairs on issues that matter to members

Events and Fundraisers

Apart from our monthly meetings and sub-group activities, we have occasional one-off events open to all members.  We were invited for an evening of croquet, hosted by the Northampton Croquet Club, we have had a trip to Littleworth Flower Farm, we held a cake competition for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee fete in the village, we are providing refreshments at the village fun day and supporting the Judeth Willoughby charity jumble sale with cakes and serving of refreshments.

Before the first lockdown, members were regularly attending walking netball at a local leisure centre.  It was very enjoyable and hopefully it will be started up again in the near future.

Our main fundraiser for the year is The Plant Sale.  It is held around the middle of May annually and has been extremely successful enabling us to support other organisations within the Parish and provide opportunities for our members.
